Odet Abadia. Lokakarya kedua bertema Bringing Traditional Culture to Life: A Hands-on Guide and Case Sharing bersama tim Movie Flow, salah satu aplikasi AI untuk produksi film.

EN | Tangerang, Indonesia, April 29, 2026 – The Film Program at BINUS University proudly served as co-host of the culminating event, the “AI Meets Traditional Culture” China–Indonesia Youth AI Visual Works Exhibition 2026, held at BINUS @Alam Sutera. This event became a cross-border creative platform that brought together artificial intelligence (AI) technology and the richness of traditional culture.
In collaboration with Shanghai Vancouver Film School and various international partners, the BINUS Film Program provided a platform for young creators to explore AI-driven visual storytelling while remaining grounded in human perspective and creativity. This activity is also supported by funding from the Shanghai International Cultural Association.
As part of the program, students participated in intensive workshops led by global practitioners, including an introduction to the AI Filmmaking Pipeline by
Odet Abadia. A second workshop, titled “Bringing Traditional Culture to Life: A Hands-on Guide and Case Sharing,” was conducted with the Movie Flow team, an AI-powered film production application. This approach demonstrates how AI can accelerate production processes without diminishing the creator’s role as the primary driver of ideas and narrative.
This initiative reinforces the BINUS Film Program’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into its curriculum while ensuring that students remain at the center of the creative process. These experiences will also enrich the Transmedia Storytelling syllabus, where students are tasked with producing AI-based short films.
Nearly 500 works from young creators across Indonesia and China were submitted to the exhibition, spanning formats such as videos, illustrations, comics, and AI-generated visual storybooks. These works showcased a unique fusion of cultural elements from both countries ranging from batik and silk, wayang and Beijing opera, to reinterpretations of traditional architecture through modern visual approaches.
A total of 50 selected works were exhibited in Jakarta and Shanghai, with 10 receiving top awards. Winners also gained global exposure opportunities, including participation in international film festivals and global art competitions.
The highlight of the event was the awards ceremony, preceded by opening remarks from Danendro Adi (Dean of the School of Design, BINUS University)
and David Chen (Vice-President of Shanghai Vancouver Film School and PhD Supervisor at Shanghai University). The event opened with a panel discussion
titled “AI Empowering Traditional Culture and Film Education,” featuring Jerry Fan (Industry Instructor, Producer/Screenwriter, AI Generated Content Creator) and Adilla Amelia (Head of Film Program, BINUS University), who exchanged insights on curriculum development and best practices from both institutions.

shortlisted finalists.
The event was also attended by Karen Wei (Head of Marketing, SHVFS) and delegates from SMA Abdi Siswa, including Jusuf Iskandar (Chief Executive Director), Ir. Pandji Kusuma (Chairman of the Board of Trustees), and Ferdinand Widagda (Member of the Board of Patrons).
In the afternoon session, selected films from SHVFS and BINUS Film were screened.
In his remarks, Danendro Adi, Dean of the School of Design at BINUS University, emphasized the importance of balancing technology with human values:
“The theme ‘AI Meets Traditional Culture’ is about empowerment, how we use future technology to revive the heritage of the past. In our curriculum, we adopt this technology with a clear philosophy: creativity and critical thinking must remain human-centered.”
He further highlighted the role of AI in the creative process:
“AI is a co-pilot, not a replacement for creators. It does not replace creativity, but works alongside it to enhance execution and idea exploration. Vision, emotion, and meaning must still come from humans.”
This perspective underscores that technology is not a substitute for creativity, but a new medium that expands the way stories are told and expressed.
The participation of the BINUS Film Program in this initiative further strengthens its role as a bridge between education, industry, and international collaboration, preparing a new generation of creators who are adaptive, innovative, and remain human-centered in the AI era.
